It's all GREEK to me!
If, like me, you were watching the teams' parade bit of the Olympic ceremony on Friday, you were probably more than a little confused by the order.
Sure it was in alphabetical order in the language of the hosts - Greek!
But I tell ya. I was watching out for my little country, Barbados. They started out with St. Lucia and St. Vincent. But I didn't think that was so weird. After all it's the greek alphabet. Right?!
Then they did the A's - pretty normal, then the B's (Bermuda, BVI). Pretty normal except for countries like Venezuela and Vietnam mixed in with them. But then the B's ended and I still hadn't seen Barbados! . . . or the Bahamas for that matter.
Given that Bajans aren't known for pucnctuality, the thought that the team had overslept and missed their slot did cross my mind but what are the odds of both the Bahamas AND Barbados doing it.
So I sit watching . . . we're progressing nicely through the alphabet. Pass the L's which blew my theory that maybe it was Los Barbados (latin name). Moved through the M's - Mozambique, Moldova, Monaco . . .
Then suddenly they say Bangladesh and I look up (cause by this time I'd given up on seeing my little team and started reading a book) AND I can see the Barbados flag approaching behind!
Yes! There we are! Number 118! Then they bring Bahamas, Bahrain, Belize and some more 'B' countries and then went back to Myanmar and continued on. I didn't watch any more after that.
But I was puzzled as hell! I even had a thought that someone had messed up. Missed a few countries and then stuck them in anywhere hoping that no-one would notice (could always blame the GREEK alphabet). So I did a bit of looking around and found this list!
This is the list of countries in marching order with the names in Greek. And it seems that Barbados, Bahamas et. al. did go in their right positions.
But it leaves me to conclude that the Greek alphabet is well mucked up*! And now I know why people say "It's all Greek to me!".
*In my humble opinion anyway . . . :-)
