More Greek Alpha-beta!

Since my last post, I've been given a little more insight into the workings of the Greek alphabet!

Apparently in modern Greek (which is different from ancient Greek), the letter Beta (Β) gives the v-sound whereas to get a B-sound they use the combination Mu-Pi (ΜΠ)! So that's why Barbados and the rest were so far down the list!

The other thing I realised from that parade list was that while Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent were the first two countries out (apparently the Greek word for Saint is Agios or Agia), Saint Kitts had to wait until position 162!

Why wasn't Saint Kitts up there with the other Saints? Well . . . my guess (and it is only a guess) is that while Lucia and Vincent are recognised Saints, there is no recognised Saint called Kitts. And so the Greeks use a direct translitteration of the name St. Kitts and so they end up with the S's.
